Guide to aftermarket reversing camera

Installing an aftermarket reversing camera For Bilmedie head units with a yellow RCA video connector

This guide shows you how to install an aftermarket reversing camera that connects to a Bilmedie head unit via a yellow RCA video connector.

Some customers have also purchased a wireless reversing camera adapter. In that case, the installation is slightly different. This guide covers both wired and wireless installation.

1. Check what is included

Start by checking which parts are included with your reversing camera.

  • Reversing camera
  • Video cable with yellow RCA connector
  • Power cables
  • Reverse signal wire, if included
  • Wireless transmitter/receiver set, if included

2. Choose the camera location

The reversing camera is typically mounted by the number plate or in the tailgate handle.

  • Make sure there is a clear view behind the vehicle
  • The camera must be mounted level
  • Avoid locations where the camera may be hit or covered by dirt

3. Mount the camera

Secure the camera in the chosen location.

  • Use the supplied screws or brackets
  • Adjust the camera angle before fully tightening it
  • Make sure the camera is mounted securely

4. Connect power to the camera

The reversing camera is normally powered from the reverse light so it activates automatically when the car is put into reverse.

  • Positive to positive on the reverse light
  • Negative to ground or negative
  • Check polarity before making the connection

5. Connect the video signal

Bilmedie head units use a yellow RCA video connector for the reversing camera.

  • Locate the camera’s yellow RCA connector
  • Connect it to the head unit’s camera input
  • The input is typically labelled CAM-IN or Rear Camera

6. If you are using a full wired run

With a wired installation, the video cable must be routed from the rear of the vehicle to the head unit.

  • Route the cable along existing wiring paths
  • Avoid sharp edges and moving parts
  • Secure the cable along the way

7. If you are using a wireless reversing camera adapter

If you have purchased a wireless adapter, the video signal does not need to be run all the way through the vehicle.

  • Install the transmitter behind the camera
  • Connect the camera’s video connector to the transmitter
  • Install the receiver by the head unit
  • Connect the receiver’s yellow RCA connector to the head unit

Please note that both the transmitter and receiver still require power.

8. Connect the reverse signal if required

Some installations require a reverse signal (usually a pink wire) for the radio to switch automatically to the camera view.

  • Locate the radio’s "reverse" or "back" wire
  • Connect it to the positive wire of the reverse light if required
  • On some vehicles, this happens automatically via CANBUS

9. Adjust the camera video signal

The resolution of reversing cameras can vary. For example, some cameras use 720p, while others use 1080p.

If the image is not displayed correctly, you may need to change the camera signal type in the radio settings.

  • Open the radio settings
  • Find the Rear Input Signal setting
  • Select the signal type that matches the camera (e.g. 720 or 1080)
  • Test the image again after making the change

The wrong signal type can result in a black screen or a distorted image.

10. Test the installation

Always test the camera before fully reassembling the car.

  • Start the car
  • Put the car in reverse gear
  • Check that the camera image appears on the screen
  • Check the camera angle
